Allergies vs. Cold

Allergies and colds share many symptoms: sneezing, coughing, runny nose, congestion, headache and fatigue. These signs can help you tell the difference.

ALLERGIES

  • Usually lasts longer than a week or is recurring
  • No fever
  • Nasal discharge is thin, clear & watery
  • Sneezing frequently or in bursts
  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Itchy throat

COLD

  • Symptoms clear in a few days up to a week
  • May be accompanied by fever and cough
  • Nasal discharge is thick, cloudy and yellow*
  • Infrequent sneezing
  • Itchy, watery eyes unlikely
  • Sore throat
*Yellow discharge could indicate an infection requiring medical attention.
